Regarding the House of Councillors election, the government decided on the 24th to hold it with official campaigning starting on July 3 and voting taking place on the 20th.

This election will be contested for 125 seats—124 regular seats up for re-election out of 248 total seats, plus one seat to fill a vacancy. Both the ruling and opposition parties have each set their own targets for winning seats and are stepping up preparations for the election campaign.

[Liberal Democratic Party] Prime Minister Ishiba indicated on the 23rd that the Liberal Democratic Party aims to maintain a majority in the ruling coalition with Komeito, including the non-contested seats.

In this election, the ruling party needs to win 50 seats.

Komeito aims to secure at least 14 seats in total, combining both single-member districts and proportional representation, matching the number of seats currently up for re-election.

In response, the opposition, particularly the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, aims to use this as a stepping stone toward a change of government. They have set a goal of the ruling parties losing their majority of seats up for election and are seeking to win at least 63 seats as the opposition as a whole.

[Japan Innovation Party] The Japan Innovation Party aims to win at least 6 seats.

The Democratic Party for the People aims to win at least 16 seats and, together with its non-contested seats, to secure at least 21 seats, which would allow the party to submit budget-related bills.

[Communist Party] The Communist Party aims to win 6.5 million votes in proportional representation and secure at least 8 seats in total, including single-member districts.

Additionally, [Reiwa Shinsengumi] Reiwa Shinsengumi has set a goal of winning 7 seats, and [Sanseitō] Sanseitō has set a goal of winning 6 seats, respectively.

The Japan Conservative Party aims to win as many seats as possible, even if its just one more. The Social Democratic Party aims to secure at least 2% of the vote in the proportional representation section and is targeting a total of three or more seats, including both proportional and constituency seats.
