In Romania, Eastern Europe, a runoff for the presidential election began on the 18th.

There is growing interest in whether the leader of a far-right party, who sympathizes with U.S. President Trumps America First policy, or the mayor of Bucharest, who places importance on relations with the EU European Union, will win the election.

In Romania, in last Novembers presidential election, an unknown, pro-Russian candidate named Mr. Georgescu took the lead by utilizing social media. However, concerns were raised about possible Russian election interference and the methods of using social media, resulting in the election being invalidated.

On the 18th, the runoff for the re-held presidential election began locally.

The runoff election is a contest between Mr. Simion, the leader of the far-right party Alliance for the Union of Romanians, who came in first in the initial vote on the 4th of this month, and Mr. Dan, the mayor of Bucharest.

Mr. Simion is known for expressing sympathy toward U.S. President Trumps America First policy and for his critical stance toward the EU, of which Romania is a member.

It is also working in cooperation with Mr. Georgescu, who was not allowed to run in this election, and is considering appointing him as prime minister.

In response, Mr. Dan has called for the continuation of a pro-European approach that values relationships with the EU and other partners. After the vote, he told reporters, I voted not for Romanias isolation, but for good cooperation with our European partners.

Some polls show that the two candidates are neck and neck, and there is growing interest in who will win.
