The Ministry of Defense has informed local municipalities that it will deploy the first four F-35B stealth fighter jets—procured for the first time by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and previously without a set deployment date—at Nyutabaru Air Base in Miyazaki Prefecture on the 7th of next month, according to interviews with those involved.

The F-35B is a stealth fighter that can take off from ships, and the Ministry of Defense plans to operate it by deploying it on large Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers, whose decks are being modified to effectively function as aircraft carriers.

It has been learned through interviews with relevant parties that the Ministry of Defense has informed the prefecture and local municipalities that the first four F-35Bs will be deployed to Nyutabaru Air Base on the 7th of next month.
F35Bは垂直に着陸できるのが特徴ですが、通常よりも騒音が大きく、防衛省はことし2月、これまでの説明を一転させて緊急時などを除いては実施しないとしていた訓練を夜間も含めて新田原基地で行うと表明し、基地周辺の住民や自治体から強い反発が出ています
The F35B is notable for its ability to land vertically, but it is noisier than usual. In February this year, the Ministry of Defense reversed its previous explanation and announced that, except in emergencies, training—which had not been conducted—would now take place at Nyutabaru Base, including at night. This has sparked strong opposition from local residents and municipalities around the base.
