The Japan Meteorological Agency announced on the morning of the 8th that the rainy season has begun in northern Kyushu and Shikoku, and has ended in Okinawa.

In the southern part of Kyushu, where the rainy season has already started, there are areas experiencing extremely heavy rain. In northern Kyushu and other regions as well, it is important to be very cautious of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising river levels.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, due to the influence of the rainy season front, it is raining in Kyushu and Shikoku. At 11 a.m. on the 8th, the agency announced the start of the rainy season in northern Kyushu and Shikoku, and the end of the rainy season in the Okinawa region.

Compared to the average year, the start of the rainy season was 4 days later in northern Kyushu and 3 days later in Shikoku, but compared to last year, both were 9 days earlier.

Also, the end of the rainy season in the Okinawa region is 13 days earlier than average and 12 days earlier than last year, and if this is confirmed, it will be the earliest end of the rainy season on record since the Japan Meteorological Agency began keeping statistics, tying with 2015 Heisei 27.

On the other hand, in southern Kyushu where the rainy season has already started, the influence of warm, moist air flowing in is causing localized heavy rain.

In the one hour leading up to 11 a.m., a rain gauge installed by Kagoshima Prefecture in Yakushima Town recorded a very heavy rainfall of 53 millimeters.

In northern Kyushu, where the rainy season began on the 8th, there is a risk of heavy rain from the 9th onward.

The amount of rainfall expected in the 24 hours until the morning of the 9th is up to 80 millimeters in northern Kyushu and 120 millimeters in southern Kyushu, and in the 24 hours until the morning of the 10th, both northern and southern Kyushu are expected to receive up to 150 millimeters of rain.

The rainy season front is expected to continue to linger from western to eastern Japan, and there is a risk that the total rainfall will increase.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be extremely cautious of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising river levels.

Heavy rain is expected soon after the start of the rainy season in northern Kyushu and other areas.
