This year marks 80 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and it has been discovered that the oldest known video footage of the Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki City, taken before it was destroyed by the bomb, has been preserved.

The footage was shot with a home movie camera by a kabuki actor who is also known as an amateur filmmaker. An expert commented, With so many materials being lost, the emergence of new footage is of great value.

Urakami Cathedral is a church that was completed in 1925, after 30 years of construction mainly by Catholic believers. However, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb, and the current building was rebuilt after the war.

The video was filmed by the second-generation Nakamura Shichikaku, a kabuki actor active from the Meiji to Showa eras who was also known as an amateur filmmaker, using a home movie camera. There is also a record that it was donated to NHK in 1976.

When Mr. Hitoshi Matsuda, head of the Photo Materials Research Committee of the Nagasaki Peace Promotion Association, and NHK examined this video, they found that the side wall of the building appeared whitish, and by comparing it with several picture postcards of Urakami Cathedral before it was destroyed by the atomic bomb, they determined that the footage was taken before 1934, the year the walls were repainted brick-red.

Furthermore, when I looked into the records of Shibatsuru, who was filmed, touring Nagasaki for a kabuki performance, I found that the only relevant instance before 1934 Showa 9 was in March 1930 Showa 5, which coincided with the note on the video stating it was filmed around Showa 5 1930.

According to Chairman Matsuda, the oldest video of Urakami Cathedral previously known was filmed around 1932, so this newly discovered video is believed to be the oldest one confirmed so far.

Chairman Matsuda said, Its rare to be able to identify an era from private films, and as time goes by, many materials are lost. The fact that new footage has emerged that has never been seen before is of great value.
