Due to the influence of warm and humid air, developed rain clouds are covering mainly the Pacific side of western Japan, and very heavy rain is falling in southern Kyushu.

In Nagasaki and Saga prefectures, there is a possibility that a linear rainband will form from around midday to early evening on the 18th, causing the risk of disasters to increase rapidly. Please be alert for landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, warm and humid air is flowing around the edge of the high-pressure system extending over Japan, causing developed rain clouds to cover mainly the Pacific side of western Japan.

During this time, heavy rain was intensifying in southern Kyushu, and in the one hour up to 8 a.m., a rain gauge installed in Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture, recorded a very heavy rainfall of 72 millimeters.

The atmosphere is expected to remain extremely unstable, mainly along the Pacific side of western Japan, through late tonight. There is a risk of very heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorms, which could result in torrential downpours.

Especially in Nagasaki and Saga prefectures, there is a possibility that a linear rainband will form from around midday to early evening on the 18th, causing the risk of disaster to increase rapidly.

The amount of rainfall expected in the 24 hours up to the morning of the 19th is: up to 180 mm in northern Kyushu, 120 mm in southern Kyushu, and 100 mm in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning people to be on alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising or overflowing rivers, as well as to watch out for lightning, tornadoes, strong gusty winds, and hail.

In Hokkaido as well, due to warm and humid air flowing toward the front, the atmosphere will remain unstable through the 20th, with intermittent heavy rain expected, which may result in torrential downpours.

The amount of rainfall expected in the 24 hours until the morning of the 19th is predicted to be up to 100 millimeters in some areas of Hokkaido, and there is a risk that the rainfall will increase further after that.

Please be very careful of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising river levels.

While some areas, mainly in eastern Japan, are experiencing extremely hot days, the high-pressure system is expected to strengthen its ridge over Japan, so extremely hot days are also expected mainly in eastern Japan.

The daytime high temperatures are expected to be extremely hot, reaching 37°C in Toyama City, Aizuwakamatsu City in Fukushima Prefecture, and Yamagata City; 36°C in Kanazawa City, Nagano City, and Niigata City; 35°C in Takamatsu City, Kyoto City, and Maebashi City; 34°C in Osaka City; and 33°C in central Tokyo, among other places.

A heatstroke alert has been issued for Fukushima and Niigata prefectures, as the risk of heatstroke is extremely high.
