Reports of road signs becoming difficult to see due to aging and other factors have been increasing nationwide, so the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has decided to introduce a new inspection method that evaluates visibility in four levels, in order to lead to more effective repairs.
目的地までの距離や運転上の注意などを示す道路標識をめぐっては、老朽化のほか、街路樹に隠れるなどして見えにくいという報告が国土交通省に全国から相次いでいます
Regarding road signs that indicate the distance to destinations and driving precautions, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has been receiving numerous reports from across the country that these signs are difficult to see, not only due to aging but also because they are often hidden by street trees.
このため、国土交通省は、道路標識の見えにくさを4段階で判定する新たな点検方法を国が管理する全国の国道で導入することになりました

各地の地方整備局の職員などが現地を直接確認し、「判読できない」「判読困難」「不良の程度は軽微で判読可能」「判読可能」の4つに分類します
Officials from the regional development bureaus and others directly check the site and classify the conditions into four categories: unreadable, difficult to read, minor defects but readable, and readable.
国土交通省は国が管理する道路標識を対象に分類に基づく優先順位をつけ、効果的に修繕や交換を行うことにしています

新たな点検は道路の異常を確認する従来のパトロールとは切り離す形で行われ、国土交通省は国が管理する全国およそ40万のすべての道路標識の点検に向けてことし夏ごろから順次始める方針です
The new inspections will be conducted separately from the conventional patrols that check for road abnormalities, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism plans to begin sequential inspections of all approximately 400,000 road signs managed by the government nationwide starting around this summer.
