昔むかし、小石川こいしかわの白山はくさん御殿ごてん町まちにお侍さむらいの一家いっかが引ひっ越こしてきた

A long time ago, a family of samurai moved to Hakusan Goten Town in Koishikawa.

このお侍さむらいは顔立かおだちがお稲荷いなり様さまにそっくりだったので、狐きつねが大嫌だいきらいだった

This samurai's face looked exactly like Inari-sama, so I hated foxes.

引ひっ越こしてきた屋敷やしきの裏うらに、壊こわれかけた古ふるいお稲荷いなりさんの祠ほこらを見みつけると奉公人ほうこうにんに命めいじて祠ほこらを取とり壊こわし、お風呂ふろの薪たきぎにくべてしまった

When I found an old, broken shrine behind the mansion where I moved, I ordered a servant to demolish it and put it in the firewood in the bath.

それ以来いらい、お侍さむらいの屋敷やしきでは奇怪きかいな出来事できごとが起おこるようになった

Since then, strange events have started to occur at the samurai mansion.

真まっ白しろな狐きつねそっくりのおばあさんが門前もんぜんに座すわり込こんだ

A pure white, fox-like grandma sat in front of the gate

狐きつねののっぺらぼうがお侍さむらいの娘むすめの首くびを絞しめ、お侍さむらいや奉公人ほうこうにんが駆かけつけると「ごぼう」の束たばになって縁えんの下したに逃にげ込こんだ

The fox's flat-head strangled the samurai's daughter, and when samurai and servants rushed over, they became bundles of burdocks and escaped under the rim.

キセルが勝手かってに煙草たばこの火ひを付つけて煙けむりを吐はく

Kisel lit a cigarette and let out a smoke

庭にわの石いし灯とう籠かごが浮うき上あがって、屋根やねを突つき破やぶってお侍さむらいの座すわっていた縁側えんがわに落おちた

The stone lantern in the garden rose up, plunging through the roof and fell on the veranda where the samurai sat.

夜中やちゅうに庭にわの木きき々が炎ほのおを吐はいて燃もえた

In the middle of the night the trees in the garden flapped with flames

お侍さむらいは「稲荷いなりのたたり」だという事ことは解わかっていた

I knew that samurai were "inari no tatari."

腕うでの立たつ2人にんの同僚どうりょうに頼たのんで屋敷やしきを守まもってもらおうとしたが、1人にんは沢山たくさんの草履ぞうりに全身ぜんしんを叩たたかれ、もう1人りは刀かたなで髷まげと着物きものを斬きられ、屋敷やしきを逃にげ出だしてしまった

He asked two skilled colleagues to protect the mansion, but one was hit in the whole body by many sandals, and the other was cut off by his hand and kimono with a sword, and he ran away from the mansion.

山伏やまぶしにお祓はらいを頼たのんだが、山伏やまぶしは突然とつぜん現あらわれた大おおきな手てに掴つかまれ、屋敷やしきから放はなり出だされてしまった

He asked Yamabushi to perform a purification ritual, but the Yamabushi suddenly appeared and was grabbed by a large hand and was tossed out of the mansion.

周囲しゅういの人ひとびと々は「お稲荷いなり様さまのお社しゃを壊こわしただけでなく、風呂ふろに薪たきぎにしたからだ

People around him not only destroyed Oinari-sama's shrine, but also made firewood in the bath.

早はやくお稲荷いなり様さまに謝あやまるべきだ

」とお侍さむらいを責せめた

"He blamed the samurai.

お侍さむらいは「やりすぎたかな」と思おもったが、このままではやられっぱなしで「しゃく」だった

The samurai thought, "I think I've done too much," but if it continues like this, it's been a "sham" and is still "shaming."

そこでお侍さむらいは、近在きんざいの猟師りょうしから「狐きつね」を買かえるだけ買かい集あつめると「狐きつね料理りょうり」を作つくり、大勢たいせいの人ひとびと々を招待しょうたいして３日にち３晩ばんどんちゃん騒さわぎの大だい宴会えんかいを催もよおした

So the samurai gathered as many "foxes" as possible from nearby hunters, and made "fox dishes," and invited a large group of people to hold a big binge-making party for three days and three nights.
