In the last war, in which approximately 3.1 million Japanese people alone lost their lives, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, just before the end of the war, and it is estimated that about 140,000 people died there by the end of that year.
This is the first time since His Majestys accession to the throne that Their Majesties have visited an atomic-bombed site. In the afternoon, they will visit Peace Park in Hiroshima City, offer flowers at the Atomic Bomb Memorial, and pay their respects to the victims.
After that, you will visit the exhibition facility for atomic bomb relics that was newly established in the park three years ago, and then view exhibits at the Atomic Bomb Museum, including those related to the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations Nihon Hidankyo, which won the Nobel Peace Prize last year.
And you will have a discussion with the storytellers, who share the experiences of the atomic bomb survivors and speak on behalf of those survivors who have become elderly.
