One of the worlds three major film festivals, the Cannes Film Festival in France, held its awards ceremony on the 24th. The top prize was awarded to a film by an Iranian director, while director Chie Hayakawas film Renoir did not win.

This year marks the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in France, where 22 films were nominated in the competition section for the top prize, the Palme dOr. At the awards ceremony on the 24th, the Palme dOr was awarded to Simple Accident, a film by Iranian director Jafar Panahi.

This work depicts men who were imprisoned and tortured by the authorities as they attempt to take revenge.

Director Panahi is known for works that criticize the Iranian regime, and it is said that his own experience of being detained by the authorities was also a motivation for creating this film.

When it was announced, the entire audience stood up and congratulated Director Panahi.

Director Panahi, who took the stage, said, The most important thing right now is the freedom of our country.

No one can dictate what someone should wear or what they cant say, he insisted.

From Japan, director Chie Hayakawas film Renoir was nominated, and lead actress Yui Suzukis performance also drew attention, but they did not win an award.

A large-scale power outage occurred in the city of Cannes. On the 24th, when the film festival awards ceremony was held, a major blackout took place in Cannes. According to local authorities, including surrounding municipalities, 160,000 households were affected.

At some venues of the film festival, the screenings were reportedly temporarily suspended.

Near the film festival venue, traffic lights were out and traffic jams had formed. On the bustling street lined with many boutiques, many shops had closed or were continuing to operate without electricity.

Local authorities announced that recovery was completed approximately seven hours later.

AFP reports, citing investigative authorities, that the base of the transmission tower supporting the power lines supplying electricity to the city of Cannes was cut, suggesting the possibility that the blackout was caused intentionally.

A woman in her 60s who lives in Cannes said, I hope that people visiting the film festival wont be disappointed and have to go home because of the power outage.
