The meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bank governors, which was being held in Canada, adopted a joint statement and concluded in the early hours of the 23rd Japan time.

The statement did not directly mention the U.S. tariff measures, but expressed concerns about global imbalances such as trade and investment.

The G7 meeting held in Banff, Canada, was attended by Finance Minister Kato and Bank of Japan Governor Ueda, and after two days of discussions, a joint statement was adopted and the meeting concluded around 3 a.m. Japan time on the 23rd.

In this meeting, there were a series of opinions expressing concern about the impact of U.S. tariff measures on the global economy, but the statement did not make any direct reference to this issue. Instead, it included the phrase, Economic policy uncertainty has declined from its peak, and we will work together to achieve further progress.

On top of that, it is said that they shared concerns about the global imbalances in trade and investment, which are believed to be behind the U.S. tariff measures.

As for exchange rates, it was reaffirmed that exchange rates are determined by the market and that actions in the market will be closely coordinated, in line with the traditional G7 principles.

Furthermore, the agreement included the importance of fair competition conditions, with excessive production of EVs electric vehicles in China in mind, as well as considering strengthening economic sanctions if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire.

After the closing, Minister Kato held a press conference and said, We were able to have in-depth discussions on issues such as the world economy and growth potential.

He emphasized the achievements by saying, It was meaningful that we were able to summarize the outcomes in the form of a statement and send a strong message that the G7 will work together in unity.
