Negotiations between Japan and the United States, prompted by U.S. tariff measures, did not reach a compromise even in the latest ministerial talks, and it was decided to continue discussions at the working level.

The Japanese government intends to gauge the other partys response while seeking points of contact, and aims to create an environment conducive to resuming ministerial-level negotiations.

Regarding the Trump administrations tariff measures in the United States, Minister Akazawa, who returned to Japan on the 30th after holding ministerial negotiations in Washington with Commerce Secretary Ratnick, met with Prime Minister Ishiba and others to report on the progress and other matters.

Minister Akazawa said, Our country has national interests that must be protected, and of course, the same is true for the United States.

He stated, We want to continue sincere and earnest discussions energetically so that both countries can reach an agreement that both leaders can approve of.

The ministerial negotiations did not result in a compromise this time either, and it was decided to continue discussions at the working level.

In response to this, it is expected that senior officials from Japans Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will remain on-site and continue discussions, particularly regarding issues such as automobile tariff rates, where differences have not yet been resolved.

In this context, President Trump stated in a FOX News interview that while there are many automobile imports from Japan, exports from the United States are few, saying, Its not fair, and has shown a stance of not making concessions easily.

The Japanese government intends to explore points of contact during working-level consultations while assessing the other partys stance, and aims to create an environment to resume ministerial negotiations.
