Screenwriter James Miki, who created many hit TV dramas such as NHKs serial drama Miotsukushi and the historical drama Dokuganryu Masamune, passed away from pneumonia on the 14th of this month.

He was 91 years old.

James Miki was born in former Manchuria. After attending high school in Osaka, he moved to Tokyo, entered the training school of the Haiyuza theater company, and then spent some time working his way up as a singer.

After that, I studied under film director Yoshitaro Nomura and pursued a career as a screenwriter.

Having produced numerous hit TV dramas, the 1985 morning drama series Mio Tsukushi, starring Yasuko Sawaguchi, depicted the tumultuous love story of its heroine and achieved a highest viewer rating of 55.

It recorded 3%.

Also, Dokuganryu Masamune, which aired in 1987 and starred Ken Watanabe, had an average annual viewer rating of 39.

It achieved a record high rating of 7% for a Taiga drama and became a huge hit, and he also worked on The Eighth Shogun Yoshimune in 1995.

Thanks to these achievements, he received the Broadcasting Culture Award in 1999.

According to his family, Mr. James Miki was hospitalized in April after falling ill. He recovered and was discharged once, but his condition suddenly worsened this month, and he passed away from pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo on the 14th.

He was 91 years old.
