It has been revealed that, in a clinical trial in the United States, cells have been transplanted into the first patient as part of a treatment for Parkinsons disease using iPS cells developed by a pharmaceutical company in Osaka.

In Japan, clinical trials for this treatment have been completed, and the company is preparing to apply for manufacturing and sales approval. Attention is also focused on whether its practical use will advance overseas.

Sumitomo Pharma, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Osaka, has been working on developing a treatment that involves transplanting cells derived from iPS cells into the brains of patients with Parkinsons disease. In addition to aiming for practical application in Japan, the company announced two years ago that it would conduct clinical trials in the United States to pursue commercialization overseas.

According to the company, last month, cells produced at a facility in Osaka were packaged alive and transported by airplane and other means over approximately 23 hours to a university hospital in California, USA. On the 25th of last month Japan time, the first clinical trial transplant was performed on a patient.

According to the company, this is believed to be the first time that cells made from iPS cells have been transported from Japan to another country and transplanted into a patient.

In Japan, clinical trials for this treatment have already been completed, and the company plans to apply for government approval for its manufacture and sale in the future.

It is estimated that there are approximately one million patients in the United States, more than three times the number in Japan, and attention is focused on whether practical application will progress in overseas markets with such a large scale.

Kenji Yoshida, Director of the Regenerative and Cellular Medicine Promotion Office at Sumitomo Pharma, said, We want to work together with many stakeholders to develop this treatment and deliver it to patients around the world as soon as possible.

This clinical trial plans to treat seven patients, and after conducting trials with more patients, aims to apply for approval in the United States.
