A groundbreaking ceremony was held at Narita Airport, where plans are underway to significantly increase the number of aircraft takeoffs and landings and enhance its functions, marking the start of full-scale construction for the extension of the current runway and the building of a new third runway.

In order to increase the annual number to 500,000, which is seven times more, there are plans to extend the existing 2,500-meter Runway B to 3,500 meters and to construct a new 3,500-meter Runway C, aiming for completion by the end of March 2029.

Up until now, preparatory work such as making roads within the site into underground tunnels has been carried out, but going forward, full-scale construction such as ground improvement and land development where the runway will be built is set to begin. On the 25th, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at Narita Airport Corporation.

About 70 people attended the ceremony, including Deputy Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yasushi Furukawa, Chiba Prefecture Governor Kumagai, and local stakeholders. Narita Airport Company President Akihiko Tamura stated, I am confident that this project will open up the future for both the region and the airport.

He said, We will proceed safely and steadily while gaining the understanding of the local community.

According to the airport company, of the approximately 1,100 hectares of land needed to build runways and other facilities, about 900 hectares—just over 80%—have been secured. The company says it will continue working with local cities and towns to acquire the remaining land.
