In the House of Councillors, questioning on the bill submitted by the opposition to abolish the provisional gasoline tax rate next month will also take place on Saturday the 21st, making it an unusual development with the upcoming House of Councillors election expected to be held next month in mind.
In the National Diet, a vote was held in the House of Representatives on the 20th on a bill submitted by the opposition parties to abolish the provisional gasoline tax rate next month. The bill passed with a majority of votes from the opposition parties and others, and was sent to the House of Councillors.
In the subsequent plenary session of the House of Councillors, the purpose of the bill was explained and questions were asked. Mr. Toshimi Funabashi of the Liberal Democratic Party criticized, saying, It would be irresponsible to abolish it without securing alternative sources of revenue to offset the loss in national and local tax income.
The Constitutional Democratic Partys Policy Research Council Chairman, Shigetoku, who submitted the bill, argued, It is said that the 20,000 yen benefit per person will be funded by surplus tax revenue, but if its just going to be used as a handout for election purposes, it should be used as a source of funding for abolishing the provisional tax rate instead.
On Saturday the 21st, questioning will also take place in the House of Councillors Committee on Financial Affairs, making this an unusual development in the Diet, as it is being conducted with the upcoming House of Councillors election, expected to be held next month, in mind.
The Constitutional Democratic Party is demanding an immediate vote after the questioning on the 21st, while the Liberal Democratic Party argues that the bill is closely related to peoples lives and that a hasty vote cannot be accepted, so adjustments are expected to be made.
However, since the ruling party holds a majority in the House of Councillors, it is unlikely that the bill will pass.
