U.S. Treasury Secretary to Visit Japan Next Week to Attend Expo On the 8th, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that Secretary Bessent will visit Japan next week as part of the U.S. delegation to participate in the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

At the Kansai Expo, each participating country or region is assigned a National Day, and Secretary Bessent is scheduled to visit on the 19th of this month to coincide with Americas National Day.

Secretary Bessent is leading negotiations with Japan over the Trump administrations tariff measures.

Bloomberg, an American media outlet, reports that no official trade talks are scheduled, but since the visit to Japan comes as the deadline of the 1st of next month approaches, attention is focused on whether ministerial negotiations between Japan and the U.S. will take place.

The government wants to find a breakthrough for an agreement through repeated communication. At the meeting of the governments task force on the 8th, Prime Minister Ishiba stated, There are still points on which Japan and the United States cannot come to terms, and unfortunately, we have not reached an agreement.

This is because we have continued tough negotiations in order to avoid easy compromises, to demand what should be demanded, and to protect what should be protected, he said.

In response, Minister for Economic Revitalization Akazawa held consecutive telephone talks with Secretary of Commerce Ratnick and Secretary of the Treasury Bessent, and they agreed to continue discussions vigorously.

Within the government, some are relieved that high tariff rates have not been indicated, while others believe that tough negotiations will continue because it is hard to predict President Trump’s actions.
