Former coach of the Nihon University weightlifting club, who was arrested for swindling cash from the parent of a high school student scheduled to join the club as a scholarship athlete, is believed to have kept the entire amount for himself without giving any money to the coach who was made to create and send the invoice, according to interviews with investigators.

The Metropolitan Police Department is also voluntarily questioning the coach and investigating the details of the misconduct, which is believed to have continued for over 20 years.

Former coach of the Nihon University weightlifting team, Kenji Namba 63, was arrested on suspicion of fraud for sending false invoices to the parents of four high school seniors who had been accepted as scholarship students with reduced admission and tuition fees in December 2022, and swindling them out of more than 2 million yen in cash. On the 11th, he was sent to the prosecutor’s office.

The former manager ordered a male coach in his 40s to create and send false invoices, but according to interviews with investigators, it appears that the former manager did not give the money deposited by parents into the clubs account to the coach, and instead took all of it for himself.

In the investigation so far, it has been found that the former coach introduced a proxy collection method—where the club collects payments on behalf of the university during enrollment procedures—immediately after taking office, and is believed to have received money for over 20 years by inflating the billed amounts.

The Metropolitan Police Department is also voluntarily questioning the coach and investigating the details of the misconduct that has continued for many years.

Namba, the suspect, has reportedly denied the charges, stating during questioning that the donations were received with the consent of the guardians.
