うなぎのかぎ賃
The payment for eel
けちんぼうな男がおりました
There was a man who was very mean.
毎日毎日ご飯どきになると、うなぎ屋の前へ出かけて行っては、腹いっぱいにうなぎのにおいを吸い込み、
Every day, when it was time to eat, he came to the ell shop, took a deep breath of the grilled eel
そのまま家へ飛んで帰って、うなぎのにおいでご飯を食べるのでした
then came back home, ate the rice with the smell of eel
それに気が付いたうなぎ屋の親父は、なんちゅうけちだ

よし、あのような奴からは、においのかぎ賃を取ってやろう

と、さっそく帳面につけておき、月末になるとかぎ賃を取りにやってまいりました
And he wrote down on his note book, went to get the payment at the end of month.
すると、けちんぼうな男は。「やい、おれはうなぎ屋に、借金をした覚えはないぞ！」
Then, the mean man said "No. I don't remember having made a debt to the eel shop!"
「いえいえ、これは、うなぎのかば焼のかぎ賃でございます。
" No no. This is the fee for the smell off grilled eels.
えーと、しめて八百文ですな。においをかいで食べたつもりになっておりますので、
Total is eight hundred (twenty thousand yen). Becausw you have eaten rice with my eel's smell.
こちらも食わせたつもりで銭を取りに来ました」
So I came here to get the money."
うなぎ屋がすましていうと、
The owner said.
男は仕方なく、ふところから八百文取り出しました。
The man had no way, he took eight hundred out of his bag.
「へい、確かに八百文。ありがとうございました」
"Yes, it is eight hundred. Thank you very much."
と、ニコニコ顔のうなぎ屋がうけとろうとしたところ、男はそれを板の間へほうりだしました。
the owner smiled, and when he was about to take the money, the man threw it down on the floor.
お金が、景気のいい音をたてると、男はうなぎ屋にいいました。
When the money made a good sound, the man said to the owner.
「においの代金は、音ではらおう。それ、銭の音をきいただろう。ほんとうに銭をうけとったつもりで、帰んな」
"The fee for the smell is the sound. You've heard the sound of money falling, haven't you. Then get the money and leave."
この勝負、うなぎ屋の負けでございます。
This round, the owner was the loser.
