The Metropolitan Police Department arrested four individuals in their 20s to 50s for selling obscene images created using generative AI on an internet auction site.

The image created is of a non-existent adult woman, and according to the Metropolitan Police Department, this is the first time in the country that the sale of obscene materials created by generative AI has been cracked down on.

Arrested were Tomohiro Mizutani, a 44-year-old retailer living in Aichi Prefecture, Takashi Suganuma, a 53-year-old company employee living in Saitama Prefecture, and two others in their 20s to 50s, totaling four people.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the four individuals are suspected of having created obscene images of women using generative AI last October and selling them multiple times as posters on an internet auction site.

It is believed that AI software, which is provided for free, was used to create images that appear to be nude adult women who do not actually exist by instructing poses such as spread legs after training on a large number of images available on the internet.

The posters were advertised as AI beauties and sold for several thousand yen each, and Mizutani is said to have earned over 10 million yen in about a year.

In response to the investigation, both acknowledged their actions. Mizutani stated, I started selling posters because I knew the profit margin was high, while Suganuma stated, I thought of making poster sales one of my businesses and learned how to make them on my own.

Images of real or fictional people created using AI technology called deepfake are flooding the internet, posing a problem. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, this is the first time in the country that the sale of obscene materials created by generative AI has been exposed.

Minister of Science and Technology, Jonai, stated, The use of malicious AI is undesirable and should be properly addressed in accordance with existing laws, during a press conference following the cabinet meeting.

In the bill concerning the utilization of AI currently submitted to the Diet, it is stated that the command tower function will be strengthened, and the Cabinet Office will be responsible for collecting and investigating related information. The aim is for the entire government to respond swiftly and steadily to challenges, he said.
