Nagano Prefecture Ikusaka Village resident Yoshitaka Toda, unemployed 43, is suspected of attempted murder and violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law for suddenly attacking and injuring a 20-year-old university student with a knife on May 7 at Todaimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, as the student was about to board a train.

According to the Metropolitan Police Departments investigation, he said, Because of my overly enthusiastic parents, I had a hard time in junior high school and stopped attending.

By causing an incident in front of the University of Tokyo, I wanted to show parents in society that if they go too far, their children will rebel and end up committing crimes.

He reportedly stated, One of the reasons I committed the crime was because I could no longer make ends meet financially.

The suspect had another knife in his bag in addition to the one used to stab the university student. According to investigators, he stated that he had bought both knives online several years ago and brought them from his home.

Also, according to the Metropolitan Police Department’s investigation of the suspect’s movements on the day, it was newly discovered that the suspect entered the University of Tokyo campus about two and a half hours before committing the crime and stayed inside for just over an hour.

He reportedly said that he walked around and ate at the cafeteria during the investigation.

It has been confirmed that the suspect came to Tokyo from Nagano Prefecture by train on the day of the incident, and the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the details leading up to the incident.
