Fear of dumpling
町内の若い者が二、三人寄り集まって、おしゃべりをしていますと、痩せた青白い顔の男が、
When some of young people in the town were talking together, a man suddenly turned pale
「はあー、はあー」と、息を切らせて飛び込んで来ました。
"Hah, Hah," he got out of breath.
「たっ、たっ、助けてくれ～」
"Tah, Tah, please help me."
男は、ガタガタと震えております。
The man was also trembling uncontrollably.
「どうした、どうした」
"What happened?"
みんなが男を取り囲んで聞きますと、男は、
When everyone surrounded him and tried to listen what he was saying, the man said:
「後ろから、まんじゅう売りがやって来る」
"A person who sells dumpling is coming.
「実は、おれはまんじゅうがどうしても怖くて怖くて。
I'm really scared of dumpling.
はっ、早く、どこかへ隠してくれ」
Please help me hide somewhere."
と、言うので、ひとまず物置に隠してやりましたが、いたずら好きの一人が、
Hearing those words, everyone let that man hide in the storehouse, but a mischievous person said:
「どうもおかしな奴だ。一つ、いたずらをしてやろうじゃないか」
"It's a weird guy. Let's do something funny."
さっそくまんじゅう屋からまんじゅうを買い、おぼんに山盛りに積んで物置の中へ入れると、
That person immediately bought some dumplings and put them all in the storehouse,
戸をぴしゃりと閉めて押さえていました。
then he closed the door.
ところがしばらくたっても、もの音一つしません。
However, even after a while, there is no noise from the storehouse.
「さては怖がって、気を失ったかな？」
"Is he so scared that he lose his mind?"
と、戸を開けてみると、中の男はまんじゅうを残らず食べてしまい、
that mischievous person opened the door, saw the man inside was eating all the dumplings,
口のまわりのあんこをべろべろなめています。
licking all around his mouth, it seemed that he had a really good meal.
「あれっ？　お前を脅かしてやろうと思ったのに食っちまうとは、どこが怖いんだ」
"What? You said that you scared and then you eat all things that threat you?"
と言うと、男は、
Then the man said:
「今度は、お茶が怖い、お茶が怖い」
"Now I'm scared of tea. Tea is scary, too."
