In 2012, when he was 78 years old, the Emperor Emeritus was diagnosed with angina and underwent coronary artery bypass surgery.

In addition, in July three years ago, he temporarily experienced severe symptoms of cerebral anemia, and as a result of an MRI examination, he was diagnosed with right-sided heart failure caused by tricuspid regurgitation, in which the valve connecting the right ventricle and right atrium of the heart does not close properly. He continued internal medical treatment such as taking medication and restricting fluid intake.
