The U.S. Department of Defense has indicated that the proportion of defense spending to GDP among its Asian allies, including Japan, needs to be raised to 5%, the same level being discussed within NATO the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
国防費をめぐってトランプ大統領は、NATOに加盟するヨーロッパ各国がアメリカに防衛を依存していて「不公平だ」と繰り返し批判し、増額を求めていて、加盟国は国防費などのGDPに占める割合をあわせて5％に引き上げることを議論しています
Regarding defense spending, President Trump has repeatedly criticized European countries in NATO for relying on the United States for defense, calling it unfair, and has demanded an increase. Member countries are discussing raising the proportion of defense spending and related costs to 5% of GDP.
こうしたなか、アメリカ国防総省のパーネル報道官は20日、NHKの取材に対して、日本を含むアジアの同盟国もヨーロッパの同盟国と同じ水準の負担を担うべきだという認識を示しました
In this context, on the 20th, Pentagon spokesperson Parnell indicated in an interview with NHK that Asian allies, including Japan, should bear the same level of burden as European allies.
その理由について「中国が大規模に軍事力の増強を進めていることや北朝鮮が核・ミサイル開発を続けていることをふまえると、アジアの同盟国もヨーロッパのペースや水準に合わせるよう、迅速に行動するのが常識だ」としています
Regarding the reason, it states, Considering that China is rapidly expanding its military capabilities and North Korea continues to develop nuclear weapons and missiles, it is only natural for Asian allies to act quickly to match the pace and standards of Europe.
そのうえでパーネル報道官は「これはアジア太平洋地域の同盟国にとって安全保障上の利益であり、より均衡のとれた、公平な負担の分担はアメリカ国民にとっても利益となる」と説明しています
On top of that, Spokesperson Purnell explained, This is a security benefit for our allies in the Asia-Pacific region, and a more balanced and fair sharing of the burden is also beneficial for the American people.
