The Abel Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics, held its award ceremony in Norway, where Professor Masaki Kashiwara, a specially appointed professor at Kyoto University and the first Japanese recipient, emphasized in his speech the importance of creativity, a lesson he learned from his mentor.
The Abel Prize is an international award presented by the Norwegian government to mathematicians with outstanding achievements. This year, Professor Masaki Kashiwara, a specially appointed professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto University, was selected as the first Japanese recipient for his work in building the theory known as D-modules in the field of algebraic analysis.
On the 20th, an award ceremony was held in Oslo, the capital of Norway. In the video shown at the beginning, Specially Appointed Professor Kashiwabara talked about how he first discovered the joy of mathematics and how he still deepens his thinking by handwriting mathematical formulas in his notebook.
Next, Specially Appointed Professor Kashiwabara took the stage, received a glass shield from King Harald of Norway, and exchanged a cheerful handshake with a smile.
Professor Emeritus Kashiwabara expressed his delight in his speech, saying, I am very honored to receive this award as recognition for over 50 years of research. He also mentioned his mentor, Mikio Sato, reflecting, He taught me the importance of creating new things in mathematics, which became an important guiding principle in my research career.
And finally, when he expressed his gratitude to his collaborators and his wife, saying that they made it possible for me to devote myself to mathematics and led to this award, the audience gave him a big round of applause.
The organizers of the Abel Prize stated that this is the first time since its establishment in 2002 that a mathematician based outside of Europe and the United States has received the award, and they hope that this achievement will help further broaden the base of mathematics research.
