In an effort to turn its business around, Nissan Motor plans to reduce its number of factories worldwide by seven, and it has been revealed that the companys proposal includes two domestic factories, such as the Oppama plant in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Nissan is expected to proceed with careful consideration in the future.

Nissan Motor, which is under pressure to turn its business around, plans to cut 20,000 jobs across the group by fiscal 2027 and reduce seven factories worldwide to review its excessive production system. Domestic factories are also being considered.

According to people involved, it has been revealed that the companys proposed plan includes the Oppama Plant in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the Shonan Plant of Nissan Shatai, a subsidiary located in Hiratsuka City.

Oppama Plant began operations in 1961 and has served as a main factory for many years.

The annual production capacity is about 240,000 units, and as of last October, the number of employees, including those at research institutes and testing facilities, was approximately 3,900.

On the other hand, Nissan Shatais Shonan plant has an annual production capacity of about 150,000 units and produces small commercial vehicles, but both plants have been facing the issue of low operating rates.

If a domestic factory is closed, it will be the first time since the Murayama plant in Tokyo was shut down under Carlos Ghosn during the management crisis in 1999.

Nissan, which has fallen into massive deficits, plans to proceed with further factory reductions under more aggressive restructuring measures. However, since this will greatly impact the regional economy, including employment and business partners, the company is expected to carefully consider its actions.

In the shopping street near Oppama Station on the Keikyu Line in Yokosuka City, people were heard expressing surprise and concern about the future.

The woman in her 80s who runs a tobacco shop said, The Oppama factory is an essential part of this town, so I feel very sad that it might be downsized.

A local man in his 50s said, This town has developed in part thanks to the Oppama factory, so Im really surprised and honestly shocked.

A local man in his 30s said, Because the employment in this town has been protected through our connection with the Oppama plant, to be honest, I really dont want it to go away.

They said, Im really worried about the employment of factory workers.

Mayor of Hiratsuka, where the Shonan Plant is located: We will closely monitor future developments. Katsuhiro Ochiai, the mayor of Hiratsuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Shonan Plant is located, issued a statement saying, We have not heard anything from Nissan Shatai regarding this report, so we would like to closely monitor future developments.
