呼ばれてきた
南米ウルグアイのホセ・ムヒカ
元大統領が13
日、
亡くなりました。
Due to his simple lifestyle, former Uruguayan President José Mujica, who had been called the worlds poorest president, passed away on the 13th.

歳でした。
ムヒカ氏は1935年に貧しい家庭に生まれ、貧困や格差に矛盾を感じて20代のころから反政府ゲリラ組織に参加し、軍事政権の下で10年以上刑務所に収監されました。
Mr. Mujica was born into a poor family in 1935, and feeling a sense of injustice about poverty and inequality, he joined an anti-government guerrilla group in his twenties. Under the military regime, he was imprisoned for more than ten years.
ウルグアイが民主化した後、1990年代から左派の国会議員として活動し、2010年から5年間、大統領を務めました。
After Uruguay became democratic, he served as a left-wing member of parliament from the 1990s and was president for five years starting in 2010.
大統領在任中も農場での生活を続け、そのつつましい生活ぶりから“世界一貧しい大統領”とも呼ばれ国民から親しまれてきたほか、大量消費社会を鋭く批判したスピーチは各国で翻訳され、日本でも人気を集めました。
Even while serving as president, he continued to live on his farm, and his humble lifestyle earned him the nickname the worlds poorest president, making him beloved by the people. In addition, his speeches sharply criticizing mass consumerism were translated in many countries and became popular in Japan as well.
おととし行われたNHKのインタビューの中でムヒカ氏は、若い世代へのメッセージとして「今は多くの矛盾を抱えた不確実な過渡期の時代なのです。
In an NHK interview conducted the year before last, Mr. Mujica delivered a message to the younger generation, saying, We are now living in an uncertain transitional period full of contradictions.

大義名分を

大切です。

語っていました。
He said, Young people should have at least one thing that they can say, This is it for me.
ムヒカ氏は晩年はがんと闘病し、最近は緩和ケアを受けていると伝えられていました。
It was reported that Mr. Mujica battled cancer in his later years and had recently been receiving palliative care.
13日、オルシ大統領が、ムヒカ氏の死去をSNSを通じて発表しました。
