The government plans to accelerate preparations for the third round of Japan-U.S. negotiations regarding the Trump administrations tariff measures in the United States.

Regarding the negotiations, the Japanese side has proposed formulating a plan to advance cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, and concrete coordination with the American side is expected to take place.

In response to the U.S. tariff measures, the Japanese and U.S. governments are working to coordinate a specific schedule to hold a third round of negotiations sometime after the middle of this month.

In the negotiations, the handling of automobiles is one of the focal points, and Prime Minister Ishiba said, We are seeking abolition.

He stated, Its not a matter of saying that this percentage is acceptable, and emphasized his intention to continue strongly demanding the elimination of a series of tariff measures, including those on automobiles.

Additionally, Minister for Economic Revitalization Akazawa also stated, Uniform tariffs of 10% on automobiles, auto parts, steel, and aluminum, as well as reciprocal tariffs, are regrettable, and our country’s position of continuing to call for a review of these measures remains unchanged.

The government plans to accelerate preparations for the third round of negotiations, with Minister Akazawa, who heads the task force, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi taking the lead in closely examining negotiation materials.

It has newly come to light that, in the negotiations, the Japanese side proposed formulating a “Japan-U.S. Golden Era of Shipbuilding Plan” to promote cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, in addition to expanding investment in the automobile sector.

The Japanese side is considering plans to promote cooperation such as expanding repair capabilities, strengthening supply chains, and collaborating on icebreakers used for navigation in the Arctic, in order to help revitalize the American shipbuilding industry. Concrete coordination with the American side is expected to take place.

On the other hand, on the 12th, an intensive deliberation will be held at the House of Representatives Budget Committee, attended by Prime Minister Ishiba, Minister Akazawa, and others. Debates are expected to take place over responses to future Japan-U.S. negotiations and measures against rising prices.
