亡くなりました。
Shigeo Nagashima, the Yomiuri Giants honorary lifetime manager who achieved remarkable success as both a player and manager and became a beloved national figure, passed away on the 3rd.
89
歳でした。
長嶋さんは千葉県出身、佐倉一高から立教大学に進んで東京六大学のスター選手として活躍し、1958年（昭和33年）に巨人に入団しました。
Mr. Nagashima is from Chiba Prefecture. After graduating from Sakura First High School, he went on to Rikkyo University, where he was a star player in the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League. In 1958 Showa 33, he joined the Giants.
大舞台での勝負強いバッティングと華麗な守備で多くのファンを魅了し、プロ野球を国民的な人気スポーツに押し上げたその活躍から「ミスタープロ野球」の愛称で親しまれました。
With his clutch batting in big games and brilliant fielding, he captivated many fans and helped make professional baseball a nationally popular sport, earning him the affectionate nickname Mr. Pro Baseball.
王貞治さんとの「ON」コンビで一時代を築き、17年間の現役生活では、首位打者6回、ホームラン王2回、打点王5回と多くのタイトルを獲得して最優秀選手にも5回輝いています。
He formed the legendary ON duo with Sadaharu Oh and built an era, and during his 17-year playing career, he won many titles, including six batting titles, two home run crowns, and five RBI titles, and was named MVP five times.
1974年（昭和49年）に38歳で現役を引退し、セレモニーで残した「私はきょう引退をいたしますが、わが巨人軍は永久に不滅です」というあいさつは、ファンのみならずの多くの人の記憶に残りました。
In 1974 Showa 49, he retired from active play at the age of 38, and his speech at the ceremony, Today, I am retiring, but our Giants team will live on forever, remains in the memories of not only fans but many others as well.
引退後は巨人の監督を2期、通算15年間務め、巨人の監督としては歴代3位となる1034勝をマークし、リーグ優勝5回、日本一2回を果たしました。
After retiring, he served as the manager of the Giants for two terms, totaling 15 years. He achieved 1,034 wins as the Giants manager, ranking third in the teams history, won the league championship five times, and became Japans number one twice.
2013年（平成25年）には巨人の監督時代に指導した松井秀喜さんとともに国民栄誉賞を受賞し、2021年（令和3年）には東京オリンピックの開会式で聖火ランナーを務めたほか、野球界で初めて文化勲章を受章しました。
In 2013, he received the Peoples Honor Award together with Hideki Matsui, whom he had coached during his time as manager of the Giants. In 2021, he served as a torchbearer at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, and also became the first person from the baseball world to receive the Order of Culture.
長嶋さんは2022年9月に脳内に出血が見つかり、都内の病院に入院して治療とリハビリを続けていました。
Mr. Nagashima was found to have bleeding in his brain in September 2022, and he was hospitalized at a hospital in Tokyo where he continued treatment and rehabilitation.
ことし3月には、東京ドームを訪れドジャースの大谷翔平選手と記念写真を撮るなど元気な様子を見せていましたが、巨人などによりますと、3日午前6時39分、肺炎のため都内の病院で亡くなったということです。
In March of this year, he appeared to be in good spirits, visiting the Tokyo Dome and taking commemorative photos with Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani. However, according to the Giants and others, he passed away from pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo at 6:39 a.m. on the 3rd.
89歳でした。
