On top of that, both sides reaffirmed the principle that exchange rates should be determined by the market.

We agreed to continue close and constructive consultations with Secretary Bessent, he said.

In addition, during the first day of discussions at the G7, Minister Kato stated, in relation to the U.S. tariff measures, that trade imbalances should be addressed not through tariffs, but by each country expanding domestic demand and reducing fiscal deficits. It is reported that many countries expressed concerns about the impact of the uncertainty of U.S. policies on the global economy and financial markets.

The focus of the G7 meeting on the 23rd will be how much of a unified message they can present regarding the promotion of free trade in the joint statement they aim to finalize.

According to the announcement by the U.S. Treasury Department, Secretary Bessent and Minister Kato discussed issues such as global security and Japan-U.S. negotiations regarding tariff measures.

Furthermore, regarding the exchange rate, it should be determined by the market, and it was reaffirmed that there is a shared view that the current dollar-yen rate reflects the economic fundamentals.
